Dear Friends,
There is nothing better than escaping into a good story---or perusing the daily offerings at Intellectual Takeout! I like to read ITO at night when the busy day is behind me and then crack a good book.
Here is Intellectual Takeout Editor Annie Holmquist’s take:
"If you, like myself, want to defend and advance Western Civilization and train our children to do the same, then we need to feed ourselves with a steady diet of truth and ideas. I hope you will join me in tackling the great works of the past!"
As Annie counsels, this is a great time to turn to durable things like great literature if you’re locked up at home – especially if you suddenly have children home from school or college students exhausted by Zooming on screens all day.
Thankfully, Annie compiled a comprehensive list of “Great Books” for you!
A hard copy of the list, along with other goodies, will be available soon for contributing members of Charlemagne Institute (stay tuned).
The good news is that we’re making the list available to you now online. Right now. You can read or print the Great Books List, just click the link below!

Sure, it is tempting to binge on movies, social media, and the 24/7 news cycle but sneak good books in there, too. You might find that all that external noise and screen time, which is often so devoid of wisdom or helpful facts, is not missed. At all.
The list is FREE to you but since there is NO FREE LUNCH in this world, we would be grateful for your support. We know that this is a tough time for many of our readers but if you can send even a small amount, it could add up to what we need to keep providing you with great content and encouragement.
There is a box next to each book title for you and your children or grandchildren to check off when the book has been completed (or added to your library). That motivates me!
Annie wrote a letter to you, describing how the list came to be; it is at the front of the list where you can read it in full but here is an excerpt to tempt you:
"A few years ago, while diving into research about classical education, I was tasked with examining what students in America’s classical schools were reading. This task became a treasure hunt as I first sought to find classical schools, both public and private, and then sought to uncover the reading materials they used for each grade. The resulting list was mammoth. We pared it down to feature the top 50 works for various age groups in kindergarten through 12th grade."
As I look forward to grandchildren (someday), I plan to purchase any missing books from the “Kindergarten to Third Grade” list for my collection. And note that kiddos love to read these with you before they can read themselves. No need to wait for kindergarten!
I have already begun to read and re-read the books recommended for elementary-aged children, all the way through high school years, such as Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift and George Orwell’s Animal Farm. What would Swift and Orwell think of the free world’s dependence on China, the shut-down of our economy and the so-called scientific modeling cited by elected officials?

Here is how Annie uses her list:
"But it’s not just for children. I, too, keep a copy of this list in my desk, using it to make the overwhelming task of choosing what to read next a little easier. Like many adults, I missed reading a number of these works as a student. Yet with this systematic checklist, I’m able to direct my energies and get down to business catching up on the classic works I missed."
It is never too late to read the classics or to renew our love of them and the timeless truths they contain! I do hope this gift to you is helpful as you continue to learn and pass on the wisdom of the West to the next generations.
Charlemagne Institute leads a counter-cultural movement, one that strives to keep a technologically advanced dark age at bay. We NEED your help to keep up the good work. Would you join us with a $50, $100, $200, or even $500 contribution? Perhaps you would consider a gift of appreciated stock?

P.S. Consider reading together. When my children were young, we would read after bath time in PJs on the “Big Bed.” When they were teens, we read as a family near one another. That set a lifetime habit of reading for pleasure and knowledge!
