John,
In recent years, the Supreme Court has been a nightmare. They’ve created an America with more mass shootings, fewer rights, state-mandated prayer, a gutted Clean Air Act, less police accountability, and more gerrymandered congressional districts. Social Security and Medicare could be next.
Make no mistake, this Court is intentionally defying the will of the people―after all, a majority of them were appointed by presidents who took office after receiving fewer votes than their opponents. If we let the popular vote win, Justices Alito, Kavanaugh, Roberts, Gorsuch, and Barrett would not be on the Supreme Court.
Sign now: Recent Supreme Court terms make it clear that states must adopt the National Popular Vote compact and end the Electoral College’s anti-democracy reign of terror!
The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact is a deal between the states that goes into effect once states representing 270 electoral votes (enough to win) ratify it. Those states will pledge to cast their electors for the winner of the popular vote. It has already been ratified by 17 states and Washington DC, representing 209 of the 270 necessary votes. This is urgent!
Since George W. Bush failed to privatize Social Security, Republicans have pushed to hide cuts behind an unelected body with superpowers. Whether it was a federal commission like Bowles-Simpson, a secret fast-tracked group of politicians like the Supercommittee, or Mitt Romney’s favorite, the TRUST Act, this approach gives politicians plausible deniability while still achieving the same goals: Dismantling our Social Security system.
The Supreme Court, stacked with unelected judges appointed by presidents rejected by voters, can act as the ultimate closed-door committee.
Sign now: Let the people pick the president, and protect Social Security!
Thanks,
Michael Phelan Social Security Works
