ACLU Supporter, my name is Savannah Kumar, and I am a staff attorney for the ACLU of Texas where we just won a MAJOR victory for voting rights in one of the most difficult states to vote in the entire nation. If you've already heard about our win and want to help contribute to the struggle for our voting rights, you can donate here. But if you haven't, I want to share more about our advocacy in Texas, because it demonstrates why this work, and your support for the ACLU, is so vital to the future of our democracy. Since 2021, the ACLU of Texas has been working with partners to challenge the broad voter suppression measures of Senate Bill 1 – an anti-voter law that severely limited the ability of civic organizations to get out the vote and assist voters, including those with disabilities and/or limited English proficiency, to cast a ballot. Let me be clear: Restrictions like these are unlawful attempts to make it more difficult for Texans to cast their ballots. They stand in the way of freedom and are a threat to our democracy. That's exactly what our team told the court in our lawsuit – and a federal judge agreed with us: Voter suppression has no place in our democracy. It's never been tougher to win in the courts, but our victory in Texas is proof that litigating in every state to protect the right to vote is worth it. And this victory wouldn't have been possible, ACLU Supporter, without your support. Your contributions to the ACLU allow me and my colleagues to show up in court ready to argue against unconstitutional anti-voter laws and win.
Sincerely, Savannah Kumar |
