Hello, Friends —

This week, several separate fires raged across Northwest Florida, including fires in Santa Rosa County (5 Mile Swamp), Escambia County (Hurst Hammock Road), and Walton County (Mussett Bayou). I am glad that there have been no reported casualties, but several homes have been damaged beyond repair.

Our local firefighters are working around the clock to contain the spread. The Florida Forest Service is warning residents to be ready to evacuate if necessary.

My staff is in close contact with local, state, and federal agencies, including FEMA, and will monitor the situation closely. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected.

If you have suffered property damage, promptly file an insurance claim. Don’t wait to clean up, but do take photos of damage for your insurance company.

If you have any questions or concerns about what is being done to control the fire, call the Santa Rosa County Citizen Information Center at 850-983-INFO (4636), or call 211 to be connected with local disaster recovery resources.

For guidance on fires and evacuations, please see this page from the Santa Rosa County Department of Emergency Management, as well as the website for the Walton County Department of Emergency Management.

JUSTICE AT LAST

This has been a great week for justice. The baseless case against former National Security Adviser (and former Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency) General Michael Flynn has been dropped by the Department of Justice. This case was rotten to the core, with evidence surfacing recently that FBI agents tried to, in their words, “get him to lie”—and much more. In the fight against an over-politicized Department of Justice, this decision is wonderful news indeed — and an American patriot has had his honor restored.

OVERDUE TRANSPARENCY

In other news, on the evening of Thursday, May 7, transcripts of interviews conducted by the House Intelligence Committee in 2017 and 2018 were finally released. Several of my colleagues and I have written multiple letters asking for these transcripts to be released, and I am glad they have finally been made public. These documents further reveal that the unlawful surveillance on the Trump Campaign was entirely politically motivated. We must ensure that the weaponization of the Department of Justice, and our intelligence agencies, never happens again.
