Yesterday, Donald Trump came back to Detroit. He held three separate events, including a rally alongside my opponent, Mike Rogers, just a week after repeatedly insulting Detroit and Detroiters.
He — once again — insulted the city of Detroit, repeated lies about Vice President Harris, and fearmongered about members of our community. He also repeatedly sang praises of my opponent, Mike Rogers. Rogers returned the favor.
But the bigger message was not Trump’s words — it’s his actions. Trump’s repeated presence here in Michigan over and over and over again is the clearest signal of all.
And at the very same time as Trump was on stage, Vice President Kamala Harris was wrapping up the third in a series of rallies across Michigan. She is campaigning here today and will return later in the week.
And while Michigan has been in the national political spotlight before, this feels unprecedented.
But it all — the repeated visits from both presidential candidates, along with a slew of other celebrities and leaders, the phone calls and texts, the endless political ads — comes down to this: This election, and with it the future of our country, will be decided by what happens here in Michigan.
And Trump knows it too: If he loses Michigan, he will almost certainly lose the White House — and Republicans will lose the Senate. And the better I do in my race, the better Kamala Harris likely does in the state as well.
That’s why Republicans are throwing everything they can at Michigan: Outside groups have already spent or committed more than $50 million in TV ads attacking me and propping up Mike Rogers.
And our state is virtually tied — recent public polls show a dead heat for both the presidential and the Senate race, Cook Political Report has our race rated as a pure toss-up, and the nonpartisan election forecasters have said there may be no state more important in the presidential race than Michigan.
The only thing we know for certain is that this race will come down to the wire and could go either way on Election Day.
