My name is Maverick, and I’m writing to you from the wild, high desert in the Twin Peaks Herd Management Area in California. I know what it means to fight for freedom. I’ve raced the wind, led my band through rugged hills, and faced dangers only the wild can throw at us. But nothing could have prepared me for the day I watched my family being ripped from our home.

The sun rose on what was supposed to be another morning roaming the land we’ve lived on for generations. Then came a faint noise in the distance — that ominous sort of sound you instantly know means trouble, and as it grew louder so did my fear. Another stallion, Lassen, our families and I barreled across the desert — determined to outrun the helicopter by keeping pace with our own racing hearts.

Somehow, it worked. Lassen and I broke free. But our families weren’t so lucky.

Helplessly, we watched as they were funneled into traps by the monster overhead and forced onto trailers that would carry them away from everything they’ve ever known. We desperately called out for them, chasing the truck that was taking them away from us. We ran back to the trap, searching for our lost loved ones, but of course they were gone. Though I managed to escape, our homes feel empty without them by my side.

More and more wild herds are facing the same fate across the West — captured, torn from family, taken from the lands that shaped us.
