In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, government authorities at the federal, state, and local level took unprecedented action to halt travel, commerce, and large gatherings of every kind to stop the spread of disease. In the face of an unknown threat, ordinary citizens, businesses, religious institutions, and academia largely complied with these short-term precautions, prioritizing health and safety over their First Amendment liberties. Many now believe that some government officials have overstepped their authority, which begs the question: What is the long-term effect of this pandemic? What precedent will
recent lawsuits set, and how will this shift in American culture affect the fight for free speech on college campuses across the country? Will the effects of COVID-19 empower school officials to further stifle the First Amendment Rights of their students out of concern for their “emotional health”?
