John,
This week last year, Justice Democrats members Cori Bush, Rashida Tlaib, Summer Lee, and Delia Ramirez led the call for peace by introducing a resolution in Congress demanding an immediate, lasting ceasefire, the return of Israeli and Palestinian hostages, and humanitarian aid to freely enter Gaza.
Since then, without its passage, we've witnessed mass starvation and destruction in Gaza carried out by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his right-wing administration. At least 41,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces, with tens of thousands injured, including what experts are calling “the largest cohort of child amputees in history.”
Millions of Palestinians are displaced with no homes to return to, and humanitarian groups continue to ring the alarm bells warning of mass starvation and death if Israel continues to block food, water, and medical supplies from reaching Gaza.
Despite killing multiple senior Hamas officials, the Israeli government has already indicated that it will not withdraw from Gaza, with its Minister of Defense proclaiming “The IDF will continue to operate in the Gaza Strip for years to come.”
Not only has the Biden Administration continued sending Israel billions of dollars in bombs and weapons to carry out its massacres, but it is now sending American troops to serve on the ground alongside Israeli forces, without getting necessary authorization from Congress.
Biden Administration officials say they’re giving Israel 30 days to improve the humanitarian crisis in Gaza or risk losing U.S. military aid. But 30 days is too late: millions of lives are at stake, and Israel has shown time and again over the past year that it is unwilling to stop its war crimes.
Once again, Justice Democrats members in Congress are leading the call for action and accountability. It’s past time for a ceasefire: we need to issue an arms embargo on Israel NOW.
Our progressive leaders are some of the only members of Congress listening to the majority of voters and standing on the right side of history demanding an end to this genocide and ethnic cleansing.
The more young, diverse, working-class progressives committed to peace and human rights that we elect to Congress, the sooner we can change the pro-war status quo in Washington and end our nation’s complicity in this genocide.
In solidarity,
Justice Democrats
