Email from Rep. Nehls Rep. Nehls Pens Op-Ed for The Dallas Morning News Greetings! I wanted to take a moment to share with you a recap on what happened last week in Texas' 22nd District and the United States House of Representatives. This Week in Washington, D.C. Rep. Troy E. Nehls' Op-Ed in The Dallas Morning News: New judgeships are needed to reduce backlogs and ensure timely justice Across the country, dozens of our nation's federal district courts are plagued by staggering caseloads and multi-year backlogs. As of June 30, 2024, there were 724,209 pending cases in federal district courts. This week, I authored an op-ed for The Dallas Morning News, discussing the Judicial Understaffing Delays Getting Emergencies Solved (JUDGES) Act of 2024. I am a co-lead of the bipartisan JUDGES Act of 2024 alongside Representatives Darrell Issa (R-CA), Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), and Hank Johnson (D-GA). This legislation would add critically needed federal judgeships to resolve currently understaffed and backlogged courts. Every American should be afforded the administration of justice in a reasonable timeframe. Read my op-ed in The Dallas Morning News HERE or on my website. Rep. Troy E. Nehls Cosponsors the Equal Treatment of Public Servants Act of 2023 The Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) was designed by Congress in 1983 to calculate benefits for workers with both Social Security-covered earnings and earnings not subject to Social Security taxes. I'm a proud cosponsor of H.R. 5342, the Equal Treatment of Public Servants Act of 2023. This bipartisan legislation would replace the WEP with a new formula that reflects an individual's work history. It would create a transition period for current workers and provide relief to retirees subject to WEP. The Equal Treatment of Public Servants Act of 2023 would update Social Security's formula to fully compensate our nation's public servants, including teachers, firefighters, and police officers, for the time they served in the private sector and the taxes they paid into the Social Security system.
