“The Corporate Assault on Honduras: Mafia-style investments and the Honduran people’s struggle for democracy and dignity”

In the aftermath of the recent settlement of longstanding lawsuits in Canadian courts against the Hudbay Minerals mining corporation, Rights Action encourages folks to listen to Karen Spring (HSN) and Jennifer Moore (IPS) talk about their new report: “The Corporate Assault on Honduras: Mafia-style investments and the Honduran people’s struggle for democracy and dignity”

Please join us for an upcoming webinar next Tuesday, October 22, at 7:30pm ET, which the Institute for Policy Studies - Mining and Trade Project is organizing in collaboration with the Honduras Solidarity Network, TNI and TerraJusta, co-authors of our recent report The Corporate Assault on Honduras: Mafia-style investments and the Honduran people's struggle for democracy and dignity

While this presentation will focused mainly on U.S. investments highlighted in the report, it's important to note the latent threat and evidence of threats that we document from a Canadian mining firm under the Canada-Honduras Free Trade Agreement against Honduran efforts to tighten controls on the mining sector.

We developed this report to examine the onslaught of at least $14 billion dollars in corporate claims against one of the most impoverished countries in the hemisphere. In particular, our analysis shows how foreign and domestic investors are bringing unjust suits in a Washington-based tribunal, ICSID, to push back on efforts to undo some of the worst policies and projects promoted under the narco-dictatorship that came to power after a military and US-backed coup in June 2009.

Free trade agreements, like CAFTA-DR, and other legal instruments enable companies to sue governments when measures are taken that they believe affect their investments or projected profits.

For the webinar, we'll be joined by community leaders who fought bravely against a toll highway and others who have been struggling to take control over their housing project since back-to-back tropical storms in 2020 and which was built with U.S. investment. A Honduran lawyer who is a specialist in constitutional law and human rights will also be joining us to comment on the tremendous injustices related to U.S. investments in charter city projects that were recently declared unconstitutional.

Please help us promote this webinar and I hope you'll also consider signing up here: https://ips-dc.org/event/corporate-assault-on-honduras/
