Our Last Stand Against Extremism?

Dear John,

Look, I'm going to be blunt: Nigel Farage is inching closer to Number 10, and it's terrifying.

In last night’s Conservative leadership debate on GB News, Kemi Badenoch and Robert Jenrick were both careful not to let the cat out of the bag…but the political reality is that, whichever one wins, they are almost certain to jump into bed with Farage as quickly as they can. It’s a no-brainer if they want to remove Keir Starmer from power in 2029. [Spoiler: they REALLY do!]

What political reality am I referring to?

Well, for starters:
* A split in the right-wing vote only benefits progressive parties like Labour and the Lib Dems. Badenoch, Jenrick and Farage all know that.
* Farage has talked openly about his desire to lead a merged Conservative-Reform Party. It will not have escaped your notice that Farage is like a dog with a bone once he decides he wants something.
* ⁠In a recent YouGov poll, 42% of Conservative Party members said they favoured a merger with Reform.
* And half of Conservative Party members believe the party should move further right under the next leader to align more closely with Reform’s policy positions.

This is NOT one of those ‘made-up’ threats

There’s no sugarcoating this…we're staring down the barrel of extremist influence at the highest levels of our government. Remember Brexit?! The economic chaos…still suffocating our economy? The divided families and communities…wounds still not healed? That was just a small taste of what's to come if Farage exploits the weaknesses in our political system to slip into power by the back door.

So are we screwed already…?!

No! Definitely not. We have the power to stop this. If we act now and wake enough people up to the danger, we CAN prevent our democracy from going under.

Ok. What do we need to do?

The key is working together to get the message out to a wider audience, to grow the movement, and to put pressure on the government to close the loopholes that Farage would exploit. We’re raring to go…we just need your help to maximise our impact.

1.⁠ ⁠Fixing our broken system…by working with our friends at Fair Vote UK and others across the sector, to push hard for electoral reforms that slam the door on extremists trying to game the system.

3.⁠ ⁠Growing our movement of activist citizens…by giving ordinary people the information and tools they need to join the fight for a fairer form of democracy.

Absolutely, it will. I’m not going to lie - we won’t win this fight unless we have more money to put into it. It’s a sad fact of political life these days that achieving meaningful and lasting change costs money. Our opponents are awash with it and we have very little. But, if there is a silver lining to that cloud, it is that we run a VERY tight ship (we have no choice!) and know how to sweat our limited funds.

No resources are wasted in Open Britain. No-one earns big bucks. We don’t spend our lives taking journalists to lunch. In everything we do, we squeeze every last drop of value out of every last pound donated. That’s the way it is and that’s the way it will always be.
