CUTTING-EDGE RESEARCH

 

REPORT: WITH UNIONS, WORKERS EXPERIENCE LESS HEAT STRESS

Ground-breaking research commissioned by the Solidarity Center and shared at a Climate Week event finds that workers suffering from heat and other environmental stresses are best able to address the effects of climate change when they do so collectively, including bargaining for safe conditions through their unions.


WORKERS FIGHT FOR THEIR RIGHTS

REPUBLIC OF GEORGIA: ONLINE GAMING WORKERS’ STRIKE MET WITH THREATS

Workers at online gaming company Evolution Georgia, on strike for better pay and safer working conditions, say they face intimidation and physical violence as the company attempts to break their strike rather than continue contract negotiations. More than 4,000 of the company’s 8,000 workers have walked off the job since July 12.

SOLIDARITY CENTER MOURNS THE PASSING OF BILL LUCY

Bill Lucy was a U.S. labor movement giant—Secretary-Treasurer of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), and founder of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU). A civil rights activist and once-in-a-generation leader, his impact will be felt forever.


SPEAKING OUT AGAINST ANTI-WORKER VIOLENCE

The Solidarity Center condemned the brutal murder of well-known land and human rights defender Juan Ló Pesca in Honduras, and called for a transparent investigation into the crime and punishment of those who played any role in his untimely death.

LIBERIA: FIRESTONE CONTRACT WORKERS WIN UNION, EQUITY

In a significant win for equity on Firestone Liberia’s rubber plantation in Harbel, more than 90 percent of contract workers voted to join the Firestone Agricultural Workers’ Union of Liberia (FAWUL).

CAMBODIA: SOLIDARITY CENTER CELEBRATES RELEASE OF IMPRISONED UNION LEADER SITHAR CHHIM

The Solidarity Center celebrated the release of Sithar Chhim, president of Cambodia's Labor Rights Supported Union of NagaWorld, unjustly imprisoned in 2022 after she and others walked the picket line. 

IRAQ: WOMEN WIN LEADERSHIP OF NEW FARMERS UNION

For the first time in Iraq’s Hawija District, women were elected to leadership positions in a new union they helped organize and form.

LATIN AMERICAN DOMESTIC WORKERS CELEBRATE, PLAN TO EXPAND SUCCESS

Over eight years, the Leadership for Unity, Renewal and Amplification (LUNA) has empowered 200 leaders across Latin America. They have enhanced their strategic, leadership, and advocacy skills while adding tens of thousands of new union members.

Unions of the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila say they will continue to fight for job security amid securing an agreement with management to reinstate workers once the hotel reopens after a renovation.
