John, we really need to talk about credit scores.
The truth is that America’s credit score reporting system has a problem. It’s controlled by 3 profit-driven companies — Experian, Transunion, and Equifax — that collect financial data on over 200 million Americans without their approval or the chance to opt-out. Not to mention, unwilling participants must pay to access their own credit reports and scores since they aren’t publicly available.
The same companies determining our creditworthiness are the same ones labeling Black people as higher risks.
While this is obviously wrong, we also know that white supremacy never sleeps.
When we say Black Lives Matter, we mean it in every sense, including abolishing this private credit score system that discriminates against Black people and Black wealth.
If you're with us, add your name to our petition now calling for an end to the use of credit scores.
For years, credit history discrimination has disproportionately impacted Black communities and their opportunities to access loans, jobs, insurance, housing, education, and more. And as common as errors are in credit reporting, they are still difficult to dispute and correct — still affecting Black people at a higher rate than white households. Private credit scores are one of the biggest hurdles in reaching true economic equity in America.
The prevalence of systemic racism only reinforces the racial discrimination present in the algorithms determining our creditworthiness. People with poor or insufficient credit information are further penalized and face even more hardships as a result.
We must abolish the for-profit credit system and create a path for public credit reporting to put an end to this economic racial discrimination. The current credit system deepens the racial disparities impacting our Black communities.
If you agree with us, add your name to our petition demanding the replacement of the failed, for-profit credit scores with a public credit registry and a stop to this cause of racial inequality.
We must continue to hold those in power accountable if we want to keep lifting up our Black communities. Together, we will create a better future for our people.
In solidarity,
Black Lives Matter
Our grassroots movement is pushing for Black liberation every single day. We are striving to create a world where Black people do so much more than just survive. It’s time we thrive.
As an organization one of our biggest hurdles is consistency.
A recurring contribution of anything you can afford goes a long way as we plan for the months, years, and even decades ahead. This is the most effective way for small-dollar donors (like you) to power our Black liberation work.
Will you make a recurring contribution of $5 or more today so that we can keep building momentum for our movement?
