U.S. ramps up aggression and racism amid pandemic

News and updates on U.S. attacks and the fightback from around the world

ANSWER condemns latest U.S. plots against Venezuela

Thousands of people marched in Washington D.C. to oppose coup attempts on Venezuela - March 16, 2019

The ANSWER Coalition condemns the latest acts of aggression against the government of President Nicolás Maduro and people of Venezuela, attempted by paramilitaries on May 3 near the coastal town of Macuto, and another thwarted infiltration today of eight terrorists, May 4, 40 miles west of Macuto, in Chuao near the sea. The Venezuelan authorities as of the evening of Monday, May 4, indicate that more plots may be unfolding, calling for maximum alert.

The hand of the Trump administration in these attacks — together with the Colombian government of Iván Duque — is evident for the world to see, especially in light of the economic sanctions, and the massive funding and arming of paramilitary and opposition groups since early 2019.

We further denounce the chain of events unleashed by Washington, including a $15 million “reward” on March 26 by U.S. Attorney General William Barr against President Maduro, National Constituent Assembly president Diosdado Cabello and others on false and unsubstantiated charges of “narco-terrorism.”

Medical terrorism: Iran battling COVID-19 is hit with new U.S. sanctions

As the novel coronavirus COVID-19 continues to spread throughout the world, criminal economic sanctions imposed by the U.S. government are threatening to escalate a public health emergency into a full-blown catastrophe. U.S. sanctions have left the country without sufficient testing kits, ventilators, antiviral medicine and other life-saving supplies. While the World Health Organization, health care providers and human rights organizations have called for the lifting of the sanctions on humanitarian grounds, the U.S. response has been the opposite.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced March 18 that the U.S. is increasing its sanctions on Iran, targeting nine entities and three people in order to  “deprive the regime of critical income from its petrochemical industry and further Iran’s economic and diplomatic isolation.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif called the United States’ refusal to lift sanctions “medical terrorism” as Human rights lawyer Arjun Sethi has called the new sanctions “literally weaponizing the coronavirus.”

Coronavirus & the blockade: Message from Cuba’s Ambassador to China, Carlos Miguel Pereira Hernández

"Things are always harder for Cuba. We Cubans don’t even get a break during a pandemic. When Jack Ma, the founder of Chinese electronics giant Alibaba and the foundation that bears his name announced to the world his intent to donate 500,000 COVID-19 rapid tests to the U.S. and a million masks, overlooking the xenophobic and racist slurs of the current Present, he had already done so for countries such as Japan, South Korea, Italy, Iran, and Spain. These were then considered to be the most at-risk countries. It was an expression of his transparent call to join forces during this tough and unequal battle." ...

"However, amidst all these news reports and announcements, one of those shipments could not reach its final destination. Apparently the U.S. transport company that was hired to carry the donation rejected it at the last minute arguing that the rules of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade against the destination country, heightened by the current U.S. administration, barred it from doing so."
