Dear John

This week has seen one of the most shocking and misguided government interventions in Australia’s history: Labor’s proposal to spend $1.4 billion on free school lunches in Queensland.

While shoved on Queenslanders as a solution to child hunger, this policy is a glaring admission of failure—an acknowledgment that Labor’s policies have driven countless families into poverty, leaving many struggling to provide basic meals for their children.

With the cost-of-living surging over the last year, and 1 in 6 Australian children now facing food insecurity, the effects of Labor’s economic mismanagement are clear for all to see. Many of Labor’s failed policies that have us at this poverty point are supported by the Liberals.

Every child deserves a nutritious meal, essential for their growth and daily learning. However, Labor's proposal is not a solution; it’s a band-aid over a deep wound. It is communism in its purest form.

______________

The free lunch move represents the most extreme form of government control since Ben Chifley’s failed attempt to nationalise the banks after World War II.

It’s a typical socialist playbook: push families into poverty with soaring taxes and overreach, then have them rely on the state for basic needs like food.

You need only look to Eastern Europe during the Cold War to see the dangers of such policies—long lines for food handouts, widespread dependency on the state, and diminished freedoms. Those Australians who came to our country from these repressed states would be looking on in horror at what’s coming.

While One Nation is pleased that Labor has finally admitted the devastating impact of its own policies, we categorically reject the notion that the solution lies in more taxes and government intervention. The path forward is clear: reduce the cost of living by cutting government interference.

One Nation advocates for scrapping the costly 'Net Zero' targets, which have driven up electricity prices by nearly 25% in Queensland over the past two years, plunging many families into energy poverty. We also propose cutting taxes on essential insurances, ensuring that families are not financially crippled when disaster strikes.

At the next state and federal elections, One Nation will put forward a series of sensible, targeted proposals to help families put food on the table—not through government handouts, but by reducing the cost of living through lowering taxes, lessening government interference and implementing policies that empower Australians, not control them.

Great news - Robert Irwin makes a comeback in this week's Please Explain cartoon- this time doing a tourism advert for Melbourne. When it comes to cities to promote - who would have thought that Melbourne would be such a rich trove of things to boast about. State debt with a side of soy latte anyone?
