Dear John
As we wrap up the first full week of May and head into the weekend, I think it is important to highlight a few actions that will be taking place this month. For starters, we will see the Governor's new Safer at Home order expire on May 15 th, which will mark two weeks of the loosened restrictions here in Alabama. Additionally, another stimulus package could come out of Washington in the near future, as discussions of a Phase 4 funding bill are ramping up. This will undoubtedly be an eventful month, and I will keep you updated every step of the way. Response to COVID-19The first eight days of Governor Ivey's new Safer at Home order have proven to be positive. Restrictions on business and recreation have been loosened in several ways, and people are able to resume a bit of normal activity. We found out Friday morning that restrictions are being lifted on even more businesses. On Monday, May 11th, restaurants, barbers, hair salons, gyms and churches will be allowed to open with some social distancing and mask requirements. I do believe this is another step in the right direction to get our economy going again. 
Thursday, we put up a survey on my Facebook page to get a feel of how people in the 4th District are thinking when it would be time to reopen. One of the results is above. 66% believe businesses and churches should be able to open immediately. You can see the full results here. Back in Washington, talks of a Phase 4 stimulus package are heating up. I think we need to take a step back and work cautiously before adding another $500 billion or more to our national deficit. In the past two months alone, we have passed $3 trillion in economic relief, which is the most money we have spent since World War II. We can't just keep throwing money at a problem before we know if the solution is working. That would be like buying a brand-new car the day after taking your old one into the shop, it makes no sense - you have to wait and see if the problem is fixed. I think we need to approach another spending bill the same way, because we do not have an endless supply of money and we cannot afford to keep swiping the national credit card. Rural BroadbandAs you know, rural broadband has been an issue I have championed for years, but it seems as though some Democrats have just realized it's a problem. The good news is that funding was passed for rural broadband in the last stimulus, with a total of $340 million directed to fix the problem. As you may recall, the funding was broken down by four categories:
I'm happy we were able to put these critical items into the last bill, but it's simply not enough. Now that there is bipartisan support for this issue, it's time to get rural broadband done. 4th District Photo CompetitionOur district is by far and away one of the most beautiful in the entire country. We have some amazing natural landscapes that are truly one of a kind, and I think we need to capture those wonderful sights. That's why I am starting a photo competition in our district, and I am calling on you to participate! All you have to do is take a picture of a place in our district that you find to be beautiful, and then email it to: [email protected].
