John,
Today, as we mark the 35th
anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake, it’s a great time to
remember why San Francisco was able to survive that devastating
natural disaster: leadership.
Our Mayor at the time, Art
Agnos, had the experience and
knowledge to
lead our city through the crisis and then the
recovery.
As your Mayor, that’s also what I
did during the pandemic: led our city through the crisis, and then the
recovery.
If I hadn’t been a Fire Commissioner, Supervisor, and
President of the Board of Supervisors first, I probably wouldn’t have
known how to respond to the Covid crisis.
But my experience from those years
of hard work, learning how each department works and who to go to and
for what, equipped me for that crisis. And the results speak for
themselves.
Today, I’m proud to recognize the
leadership and heroism of the brave men and women of SFPD and SFFD,
who rescued the people trapped in the collapsed Central Freeway, in
the collapsed upper span of the Bay Bridge, and of course, from the
massive fires that engulfed the Marina.
Our first responders train and
practice and prepare every single day, so they are ready, if and when
disaster strikes…so they too can lead, and use their experience to
protect all San Franciscans.
