John, a just-released survey reveals that 33% of parents have reported rising child care costs over the past year . And with almost 1 in 6 home care workers living in poverty, care workers already can’t afford to support their families.
The care crisis is only getting worse. Congress must act to make the major investments needed to fix our broken care system.
Families cannot afford to extend the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act for corporations and billionaires, which next year will give the top 1% a tax break of more than $60,000 while care workers will receive less than $500 , on average. People making less than $114,000 on average saw “no change in earnings” from the corporate tax rate cut, while top executive salaries increased sharply.
If the current tax law is extended, trillions of dollars that families desperately need invested in care could once again go to the wealthiest individuals and corporations. It’s up to us to mobilize a huge public outcry to stop it from happening.

The same survey showed that nearly half of parents are already facing the challenges of increased child care costs, unexpected closures of childcare facilities, or the struggle to find care at all. At the same time, many care workers can’t afford to feed their families, and face exploitation, harassment and stolen wages.
The equation is broken, and families on all sides lose out. The expiration of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is a chance to fix the broken equation.
Elected officials will have to decide: allow the wealthy and corporations to keep benefiting from huge tax breaks, or use those resources to keep taxes on working families low and invest in the care infrastructure that millions of families and workers need.
