Dear Friends,

As fall settles in, I’m excited to share some updates and helpful tips to help you make the most of the season.

August was a busy month, filled with events across the San Gabriel Valley region, where we celebrated initiatives to lower costs, strengthen the middle class, and protect our American freedoms. In September, I returned to Washington, D.C., working to pass key legislation and ensure the voices of California's 28th District are heard. Now, with October upon us, I’m happy to be back in the district, continuing my efforts locally. I look forward to seeing many of you out and about!

I am deeply grateful to the courageous first responders who tirelessly worked around the clock to contain the Bridge Fire. Igniting on September 8 in the Sheep Mountain Wilderness of the Angeles National Forest, the fire scorched over 54,000 acres across Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties. Thankfully, despite the devastation, there were no fatalities.

I was proud to lead my colleagues in drafting a letter to Governor Newsom, urging him to declare a State of Emergency to bolster the response efforts and protect the health and safety of affected communities. The same day he received our letter, the Governor officially declared the Bridge Fire a state emergency, enabling the mobilization of additional personnel and resources to the site.

August is a special time where members of Congress can spend the entire month at home! It was so incredible seeing old and new faces as I got to attend many events across the San Gabriel Valley. Check some of them out here:

Affordable Housing Complex for Seniors in Pasadena

I attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Heritage Square South, an Affordable Housing complex for seniors in Pasadena.

Visiting Motiv Space Systems in Pasadena

Image

California’s 28th District is home to innovative small businesses like Motiv Space Systems. This was my second tour of their facility, where they lead advancements in space electronics and robotics. As a member of the Small Business Committee, I had the privilege of inviting Motiv to testify before Congress about their success in securing federal grants that fuel small business research and development, small businesses are the backbone of our economy.

Cucamonga Canyon Land Conservation Project

Image

I was thrilled to join City of Rancho Cucamonga and local advocates to present $1,616,279 in federal funding for the Cucamonga Canyon Land Conservation project! This funding will support the City’s efforts to purchase land for conservation, improve hiking and recreation, and protect the area's beauty so that residents can enjoy it for generations.

Bingo Night with the American Legion Post 288 & VFW Post 1614's

I loved calling numbers at American Legion Post 288 & VFW Post 1614's 12th Annual Bingo Night. It was great to meet some of our local heroes and discuss the PACT Act, which expands VA benefits for Veterans exposed to toxic substances. Always grateful for our community's Vets.

These were just a few of the events I attended, as always it was a great time.

This past summer it was so fun to cheer on Team U.S.A during the Olympics. It was even more fun to cheer on some hometown athletes including Jajaira Gonzalez of Glendora, Brittany Brown of Claremont, Collin Morikawa of La Cañada Flintridge, and Samantha Bosco of Claremont. Samantha actually claimed a GOLD medal in victory in the C4 individual time trial race and Brittany a BRONZE medal in the 200 m track and field event. Congratulations to our San Gabriel Valley Olympians!

I loved reading this Washington Post profile piece that took an exclusive look inside Pasadena's very own NASA JPL.

JPL is a global leader in space exploration and is always making groundbreaking discoveries, including in exoplanet research. I am proud to support JPL's vital missions and workforce!

This is just a glimpse of the recent legislation I’m championing in Congress. As always, California's 28th District remains at the heart of every decision I make—whether drafting, voting on, or passing new laws.

  • In early September the House passed H.R. 9076, the Protecting America’s Children by Strengthening Families Act, as amended, on a vote of 405-10, which included 4 of my bills! The legislation reauthorizes Title IV-B of the Social Security Act, currently a $689 million collection of child and family services programs that help protect children, preserve and reunite families, and promote and support adoption.

  • Providing Real Opportunities for Growth to Rising Entrepreneurs for Sustained Success Act (PROGRESS Act) to improve access to capital for small businesses owned by women and people of color.

  • The Polluters Pay Climate Fund Act requires the largest U.S.-based fossil fuel extractors and oil refiners and foreign-owned companies doing business in the U.S. to pay into a $1 trillion Polluters Pay Climate Fund, with their contributions based on a percentage of their global emissions.
