President's Message

NASN stands in solidarity with the communities affected by the devastating impact of recent hurricanes. As natural disasters continue to disrupt lives, schools, and the health of students across the nation, NASN recognizes the critical role of school nurses in ensuring the well-being of children during times of crisis.

In times like these, the vital role of school nurses is more evident than ever. School nurses are often the first responders within educational settings, providing essential health services and emotional support and connecting families to community resources in the aftermath of disasters.

NASN remains committed to supporting school nurses with resources and training to respond to emergencies. We encourage school districts to ensure adequate preparedness measures are in place to safeguard student health. Together, we can rebuild and create resilient environments where children can continue to learn and thrive despite the challenges posed by natural disasters.

Managing Chronic Health Conditions

Implementing the Allergy and Anaphylaxis Clinical Practice Guideline and Toolkit

Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) are statements informed by a systematic review of research/evidence and provide recommendations for clinical practice to improve healthcare quality and patient outcomes. NASN's School Nursing Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guideline: Students with Allergies and Risk for Anaphylaxis provides school nurse–specific best practice recommendations and strategies to promote high-quality care and improved health and academic outcomes for K–12 students with allergies and at risk of anaphylaxis. The NASN School Nurse article Introducing NASN's School Nursing Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guideline: Allergy and Anaphylaxis CPG and Implementation Toolkit offers an overview of the CPG and Implementation Toolkit.

Staying informed helps you offer the best possible care to students, manage health conditions, and respond effectively to school health crises.

Improving School Community & Student Health

Red Ribbon Week Celebrated Annually October 23-31

Each year, individuals, schools, and communities across the US show their commitment to a healthy, drug-free lifestyle by wearing or displaying the red ribbon. Red Ribbon Week raises awareness of drug use and encourages us all to promote drug-free lifestyles. The DEA has created an online toolkit to help promote Red Ribbon Week in your school or community.

Related Resources: NASN believes that all students, as well as any person on school grounds, should have equitable access to safe and effective emergency overdose-reversal medication and care if an opioid overdose occurs in the school setting. The no-cost Naloxone Education for School Nurses Toolkit offers resources to assist you in evaluating and responding to the drug overdose crisis.
