SpaceX Delaunched in California

The California Coastal Commission voted 6-4 last week to oppose Musk’s plans to launch as many as 50 SpaceX rockets a year from Vandenberg Air Force Base in Santa Barbara County. Musk’s response was to take the agency to court, which he did Tuesday, claiming in a lawsuit that it “egregiously and unlawfully” overreached its authority, and was “engaged in naked political discrimination against” SpaceX.

“Rarely has a government agency made so clear that it was exceeding its authorized mandate to punish a company for the political views and statements of its largest shareholder and CEO.”

The suit also complains “the Commission is trying to unlawfully regulate space launch programs – which are critical to national security and other national policy objectives – at Vandenberg.”

William "Chip" Mellor, 1950 - 2024

The Pacific Research Institute mourns the passing of William “Chip” Mellor, who died this week after a battle with leukemia. Mellor served as PRI’s second president from 1986 to 1991. During his time at PRI and throughout his stellar career, he had a passion for the law and holding government accountable to the people.

Following his tenure at PRI, he went on to co-found the Institute for Justice with Clint Bolick – serving as its founding president and later as board chairman. Under Mellor’s leadership, the national civil liberties law firm represented everyday people in their legal battles against government overreach, and he personally litigated several cases over the years.

Over a career spanning more than 40 years, Mellor made numerous significant and lasting contributions to the liberty movement and his legacy will be fondly remembered by freedom-loving Americans for generations to come.

PRI extends our sincere condolences to his family members and loved ones.
