At MDVA, Every Day is Veterans Day

As our nation approaches another Veterans Day (Monday, Nov. 11), Minnesota’s more than 286,000 Veterans may reflect on the individual journeys that brought them to become a “Veteran.”

We are both diverse and similar in so many ways.

I am often quoted to say: “Veterans are people, too.” Veterans come from all walks of life, represent urban and rural roots, enjoy a variety of interests, may be part of large or smaller families, and had diverse experiences during their military careers.

Hennepin County Effectively Ends Veteran Homelessness

Minnesota is one step closer to ending Veteran homelessness across the state with Hennepin County Continuum of Care leaders announcing on Oct. 15 that they had reached “functional zero.” This milestone leaves only the Ramsey County Continuum of Care to reach this same goal, before Minnesota may become the fourth state in the country to end Veteran homelessness.

Powerful Bond of Military Service Honors Unaccompanied Veterans

“The biggest impacts are the ones that are made when no one is watching.”

One of the most requested benefits Minnesota Veterans make is dignified and compassionate burial in one of four Minnesota State Veterans Cemeteries. This benefit is available for no cost for eligible Veterans.

When a Veteran doesn’t have a family member to make burial arrangements or attend a burial service, the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) steps in to ensure these unaccompanied Veterans are remembered by a grateful country.

Work Therapy Benefits DOMS Residents and Fort Snelling National Cemetery

Veterans living at one of the two Minnesota Veterans Homes Domiciliary Program (DOMS) locations in Hastings or Minneapolis often receive as much as they give through work therapy. DOMS supports Veterans in transition by helping them to find stable housing, manage health and wellbeing, and work toward vocational goals.

Duluth Gathers for Veteran Suicide Prevention and Awareness Day

Minnesota loses 100 Veterans a year to suicide. Veterans, advocates, supporters and community leaders came together Saturday, Oct. 5 to recognize this tragedy on the 6th annual Minnesota Veteran Suicide Prevention and Awareness Day.

Sharing their personal stories were Roger Reinert, Duluth Mayor; Shelly Hanson, mother to a Veteran who died by suicide and founder of The Armadillo Project; and Jeff Pinger, 148th Airlift Wing CMSgt and mentor to a young airman who died by suicide. They and others in attendance are committed to ending this tragedy.

MDVA Announces New Government Affairs Director

Jon Kelly has joined MDVA as our new Government Affairs Director. Jon comes to us with more than eight years of service and Capitol experience with the State of Minnesota.

He previously served as the Director of Government Affairs for the Minnesota Department of Commerce and Senior Policy Advisor to Governor Walz and Lt. Governor Flanagan covering a number of policy areas including Veterans Affairs, Economic Development and Bonding. Prior to moving to Minnesota, Jon worked in the New York State Assembly and in the financial services industry.

MDVA Employees selected for Senior Leadership Institute and Emerging Leaders Institute

Several MDVA employees have been selected to participate in the State of Minnesota Senior Leadership Institute (SLI) and Emerging Leaders Institute (ELI).

This year, one individual was accepted into the SLI program and four individuals were accepted into the ELI program from agencies across the state.
