Hi John.
I understand grocery prices are too high for Kansas families. Congress must take action to make life more affordable.
One critical way we can do that is by securing our agricultural supply chains.
Supply chain disruptions – whether new invasive pests or spikes in fertilizer costs – can have a big impact on prices at the grocery store. And in this global economy, world events can play a major role in driving up prices. This is especially important to address as our nation pushes back against the Chinese government’s growing influence in agricultural sectors.
That’s why I worked with Republicans and Democrats to introduce the Securing American Agriculture Act. Click here to learn more about it.
Helping our farmers and ranchers grow and deliver their food more cheaply supports our state’s largest economic sector – agriculture. It also means lower prices at the grocery store for hardworking Kansans.
Here’s just one example of how supply chain bottlenecks can drive up prices.
Russia is a major fertilizer exporter. After Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, fertilizer prices increased more than 50 percent in just a few short months. U.S. wheat and corn farmers spent nearly half of their operating expenses on fertilizer, so this naturally led to higher prices here at home.
Now China’s growing influence in the agriculture sector creates new risks. That’s why our bipartisan bill requires the Secretary of Agriculture to annually assess agricultural supply chains that can be impacted by China.
That includes things like fertilizer, veterinary drugs, and agricultural equipment. Disruptions to any of these supply chain inputs could contribute to future price hikes. The bill also requires the Secretary to provide recommendations to address potential threats that could affect U.S. food production.
There’s certainly a lot more work to do. But this is a concrete and bipartisan step we can take to help Kansas agricultural producers and lower grocery prices.
