Friends,
Last Tuesday, I sat on stage with my opponent, Bill Wells, for a candidate forum. The goal of this forum was for each of us to share our views and priorities with San Diego voters.
And let me tell you, it was beyond disturbing to hear him use the 90 minutes of that forum to repeatedly demonize immigrants with far-right xenophobic rhetoric.
At one point he even seemed to say that he only wants white immigrants in this country. (Seriously.)
Let’s be clear: This kind of xenophobic rhetoric doesn’t make any of us safer. It’s harmful and divisive, and it’s not going to solve any of the important issues we need to address in San Diego or across the country.
So many of the people stoking fear around immigrants and asylum seekers seem to forget that our current asylum laws were created in the aftermath of the Holocaust, when Jews were denied the refuge they desperately needed.
The values of compassion and justice are the foundation of who we are as a country. People who want to be leaders in our federal government should NOT be demonizing those who are fleeing violence and persecution and seeking safety in America.
Look, through my first two terms in Congress, I’ve heard directly from Customs and Border Protection and those directly working on the issue every day. I visit the border at least once a quarter, and every person I’ve talked to has made it 100% clear that the best way to address our immigration challenges is to create more and faster legal pathways to citizenship.
I’m proud to fight for a compassionate and fact-based approach to immigration in Congress, and I’m asking for your support to keep doing this critical work.
Will you make a contribution to my re-election campaign today to stand against the dangerous rhetoric my opponent is spreading and make sure we defeat him in November? [[link removed]]
Thank you for standing with me on this.
-Sara
