This month, the Academy released Habits of Heart and Mind: How to Fortify Civic Culture, a resource for repairing and strengthening civic culture in America. The new report, developed by the Working Group on Defining Civic Culture, highlights the what, the why, and the how of creating a robust civic culture in America. Using the concepts and case studies, it outlines how to develop a stronger commitment to constitutional democracy and foster a more resilient civic culture. 

On October 28th, the Academy will host a virtual panel with Ben Klutsey (Mercatus Center at George Mason University), Eric Liu (Citizen University), Goodwin Liu (Supreme Court of California), Laurie Patton (Middlebury College), and Natalie Tran (CAA Foundation) to discuss the report’s findings.

The 2024 U.S. Election will take place on Tuesday, November 5. Across the country, organizations and ordinary citizens are helping Americans vote, volunteering as poll workers, supporting election officials, and more.

• The National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) created a website to help eligible voters find how and where to vote. 

• The U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) created information resources for voters and for election officials.

• The American Bar Association (ABA) published a report with specific steps lawyers and local bar associations can take to protect our constitutional democracy. 

The Harvard Kennedy School will host a webinar highlighting campus initiatives that seek to engage students’ civic learning and support their development as civic actors, with moderator Danielle Allen and panelists John Bridgeland, Cecilia Muñoz, Jenna Storey, and Rajiv Vinnakota.

Over Zero, a project of the Hopewell Fund, launched a new website with strategies and messaging guides to support community and faith leaders, city officials, journalists and others understand and respond to political violence throughout the election cycle.

CivXNow released the 2024 Civic Education State Policy Scan, an interactive map of civic education policies across all 50 states.

U.S. Representatives Jamie Raskin (MD-8), Don Beyer (VA-9) and Senator Peter Welch (D-VT) reintroduced the Ranked Choice Voting Act, which would require ranked choice voting for all congressional primary and general elections. The Our Common Purpose report recommends ranked choice voting to achieve equality of voice and representation. 

Writing in The New York Times (Opinion - October 10), David French explains why 18-year term limits for Supreme Court Justices would address a political crisis without harming judicial independence.

The Washington Post Editorial Board (October 3, 2024) makes a forceful argument for why ranked choice voting should be at the top of the list for democracy reform.

Citizen University is accepting applications for its 2025 Youth Collaboratory, a program for high school sophomores and juniors who want to learn how to build civic power, share power in their community, and create a stronger civic culture. Apply by November 1.
