In elections around the world over the past year, voters were less able to make informed decisions, fully participate in the electoral process, and have their voices heard. This was a key finding from Freedom on the Net 2024, Freedom House’s annual survey and analysis of internet freedom around the world. The report, released this week, noted that the global decline in internet freedom has extended to 14 consecutive years.
This year’s findings are deeply concerning, but there is still reason to be hopeful. Warnings about the possible impact of false and misleading information on elections served as a catalyst for action.
