In one of the latest absolutely despicable attempts by anti-choice extremists to stop voters from protecting reproductive health care, Republican Governor of Florida Ron DeSantis’s health department threatened criminal charges for television stations that run an ad calling for the repeal of Florida’s abortion ban, which is one of the strictest in the nation.
Counsel for the health department is accusing the ad of violating the “sanitary nuisance” law — often used to charge people with overflowing septic tanks or unclean slaughterhouses, which can carry a sentence of up to 60 days of imprisonment.
If you haven’t guessed, the ad isn’t about septic tanks or slaughterhouses. It’s about a woman named Caroline.
Caroline is a mother in Florida who was diagnosed with brain cancer during her second pregnancy. She had an abortion in order to receive treatment to fight that cancer and be there for her young daughter. That treatment would not have been allowed under Ron DeSantis’s abortion ban, and it would not be allowed under bans that my opponent Tony Wied would allow states to implement.
I have seen situations like Caroline’s — where patients had to end wanted pregnancies due to circumstances beyond their control. I know the stakes, and I know the consequences when these decisions are taken out of the hands of patients.
