I don’t have to tell you how devastating this pandemic has been for so many Mississippians and Americans across the country, particularly for workers who’ve lost their jobs. It’s created financial insecurity we’ve frankly never seen before.

That instability has resulted in an unprecedented 33.3 million people applying for unemployment benefits, more than ever before in our nation’s history. Since mid-March, 1 in 5 Americans have filed. Chances are someone in your family or someone else you know in Washington has already been affected.

Until our country fully reopens and our businesses bounce back from this pandemic, it’s on our leaders in Washington to lend a helping hand to our workers and families struggling to pay the bills and make ends meet in the meantime.

That’s why I believe the next COVID-19 relief package must include measures that protect consumers before and after this pandemic — for example, a moratorium on evictions.
