Over the course of my career, I have been referred to as Attorney, Deputy Commissioner, County Commissioner, Chairwoman, Professor, and Madam Auditor - but my favorite is from my niece: ‘Auntie Advocate.’
One day, my niece Sky asked what do you do at work everyday ? Attempting to give a simple answer, I responded, “ I’m an advocate for people who don’t have one by ensuring taxpayer dollars get to the people and places that need it most .” She wasn’t sure what to think but was excited when I stated, “ I follow the money, it’s important for us to know how it’s spent ” and gave her a dollar.

I understand first-hand that it’s hard to be what you can’t see, and while she may not have understood the significance of this moment, she witnessed the first woman of color being sworn in as a member of the Council of State - her very own Auntie Advocate, just as I look forward to casting my vote for Madam Vice President Kamala Harris.
