John, on this day one year ago, Justice Democrats members Cori Bush, Rashida Tlaib, Summer Lee, and Delia Ramirez introduced a resolution in Congress calling for an immediate, lasting ceasefire, the return of Israeli and Palestinian hostages, and for humanitarian aid to freely enter Gaza.
Fellow Justice Democrats Jamaal Bowman, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, AOC, Greg Casar, and Pramila Jayapal joined them in support of this resolution for peace, demonstrating the necessity of our progressive bloc’s leadership in Congress.
Unfortunately, Cori, Rashida, Summer, Delia, and other Justice Democrats were attacked and vilified by colleagues on both sides of the aisle for leading the call for a ceasefire, and their resolution never passed. The war crimes, genocide, and ethnic cleansing carried out by the Netanyahu Administration were allowed to continue unfettered for the past year, with the help of billions of dollars in U.S. weapons and bombs.
Now, Gaza has been turned to rubble, more than 41,000 Palestinians have been massacred by the Israeli military, and millions of Palestinians are at risk of starvation and death due to ongoing violence and a lack of food, clean water, and medical supplies being blocked by the IDF.
Meanwhile, the Biden administration wants to send another $20 billion in weapons to Israel.
But our progressive leaders in Congress haven’t given up the fight for peace, and neither can we. Justice Democrats members are leading the call for an arms embargo, and for the first time in U.S. history, there will be a vote in Congress to block weapons to Israel.
The only reason the United States hasn’t secured a ceasefire in the last year is because we continue to arm the Israeli military’s genocide. There are millions of people counting on us to take action and stop our government from funding this continued destruction. The immense loss of life is already devastating, but we can still save countless lives and end Israel’s forced humanitarian crisis against the people of Gaza if Congress and the Biden Administration act now.
In solidarity,
Justice Democrats
