I’m reaching out today because we are in need of your help.
The Progressive is facing a challenging budget shortfall this summer so, in response, we are launching an emergency fundraiser to help us get back on track.
Our publication, like many others, has witnessed a troubling decrease in both subscriptions and donations in recent years. This slowdown has forced many publications to cut back on content, reduce staff and office sizes, and, in the worst cases, close completely.
As I'm sure you can appreciate, keeping a critical independent newsroom in operation is challenging enough, but the threats that journalistic freedoms are facing today are real and alarming. There is a real danger that the press is being weakened through these outside attacks—some of which emanate from the Oval Office.
The importance of a free and independent press has never been greater; much of our nation’s news is produced by private interests or through news outlets owned by billionaires, promoted by corporate algorithms.
Here at The Progressive, we are especially thankful to have dedicated readers, like you, who help keep our publication resilient and who understand the impact that financial and editorial independence has on sustaining democracy.
