Hi John,
Did you know that the president can invoke extraordinary power through a
simple stroke of a pen?
By declaring a national emergency, a president can gain access to 148
statutory powers, many without any congressional action.
Why this matters: The founding fathers intended for the executive branch to
have checks and balances to limit power.
Presidents should not be able to bypass Congress to spend recklessly or avoid
addressing bad legislation.
The unchecked use of emergency powers threatens the balance of our government
— but together, we can restore that balance.
How?
The REPUBLIC Act and the ARTICLE ONE Act would require Congress to approve
emergency declarations within 30 days and limit the duration of such
emergencies to one year, unless Congress approves an extension.
In fact, AFP sent two letters urging Congress to pass these bills and help
reestablish our system of checks and balances as intended by the founding
fathers.
