Some days the reasons we fight for voting rights and our democracy are self-evident and directly in front of us in the news. Other days we are reminded why we work so hard by a kind word or a shared moment. It's in that spirit that we share this quote from Martin Sheen:

"We are rightly challenged to find something in our lives worth fighting for. Something deeply personal and uncompromising. Something that can unite the will of the spirit with the work of the flesh. And when we find that we will discover fire for the second time. And then we will be able to help lift up this nation and all its people to that place where the heart is without fear and the head is held high.

Where knowledge is free, where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow, domestic walls. Where words come out from the depths of truth and tireless, striving, stretch our arms towards perfection. Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sands of dead habit. Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever-widening thought and action.

Into that heaven of freedom, dear father, let our country awake."

Mr. Sheen was channeling President Bartlet, speaking at an event honoring the TV show The West Wing, but that shouldn't take anything away from his words.
