As Kamala Harris ([link removed]) and Donald Trump ([link removed]) sprint toward the finish of the shortened 2024 presidential race, it is time to ask: What issue should be foremost in U.S. voters’ minds when they cast their ballots?
It’s not the cost of living, immigration, abortion or foreign wars, though all are critically important. Overshadowing them is this election’s meta-issue — the insistent question that just won’t go away: Can Americans entrust their democratic institutions and traditions to a vengeful Trump and a Republican Party he has remade in his image?
Trump is acutely aware of the danger in that question. He accuses Harris and “radical leftists” of posing the real threat ([link removed]) to U.S. democracy.
With trademark disregard for honesty, civility and intellectual coherence ([link removed]) , Trump piles on the insults, calling the vice president a socialist-communist-fascist ([link removed]) dumbbell who’s “mentally impaired” to boot.
It’s ugly and nonsensical, but, hey, it’s Trump; in his carnival barker playbook, making sense is for losers.

As the 2024 presidential election draws closer, discussions around education reform have been overshadowed by other pressing national concerns, from inflation to foreign policy. However, with growing dissatisfaction over the state of public education, especially in low-income communities, PPI is drawing attention back to one of the most critical issues facing America’s future: how to improve the performance of our public schools.
PPI’s research highlights 10 U.S. cities where at least one-third of students are enrolled in public charter or charter-like schools. In these cities, low-income students are significantly closing the gap with statewide averages, with proficiency gains ranging from 25% to 40%.

Alex Terr is the Deputy Press Secretary for the Progressive Policy Institute.
Prior to his time at PPI, Alex was a Press Assistant for Senator Tom Carper where he facilitated many legacy stories to be published as the Senator ran through the tape in his final year in office. He also has internship experience at SKDK, Giffords and the U.S. House of Representatives.
Alex graduated from the University of Miami (FL) in May 2023 with degrees in Political Science and Journalism. Outside of work, he enjoys playing tennis, cheering on the New York Mets and searching for the best cafecito in D.C.
