The 2024 election is approaching, and the Prospect is committed to delivering high-quality reporting on the stories that matter. As an independent nonprofit magazine, we rely on reader support to make our work possible. We work hard to produce unbiased, fact-based journalism to help you navigate this critical election, but we can’t do it without you.
We've set an ambitious goal of raising $50,000 this month to make our work possible. While our readers have stepped up to help fuel our election coverage, we've fallen behind, and we need your help to get back on track and reach our goal! A generous donor has agreed to match all online donations, so your
contribution would have an outsized impact.
In our increasingly polarized climate, virtually all major policy issues are decided in the courts. In recent years, the Senate has confirmed lower court judges along strictly partisan lines, creating red-state judges and blue-state judges. This makes it easy for conservative activists looking to file court cases to block national legislation to “judge-shop”, or handpick judges in high-stakes cases who will deliver their preferred outcome. This rising trend is straining the coherence of our federal system, pushing the judiciary and the country toward a constitutional crisis.
For our October special issue, Hassan Kanu wrote about how the courts have split so dramatically, and what this judicial crisis means for our democracy. Finding solutions might require looking entirely outside of the courts, towards a greater national consensus.
This month, we’re releasing a special issue on how state policy has diverged so sharply in red and blue states. Depending on where you live, your life expectancy, quality of life and economic well-being could vary wildly. And states aren’t just content to legislate policy that stops at state borders. Far-right activists championing extremist policies in red states want to impose their vision on the entire country, through the courts, corporate collusion and even political violence. This dynamic is best understood as a cold civil war, and it impacts the health and wellbeing of millions of Americans. Click here to read our special issue on America’s cold civil war:
We'll be rolling out this special issue on our website over the next two
weeks, covering everything from labor protections, the future of public schools, our politicized courts, the threat of political violence and much more. For just five dollars a month, you can get our award-winning print magazine, published bimonthly, sent straight to your door. And by becoming a subscriber, you’ll help power our core editorial mission: telling stories about Ideas, Politics and Power.
