John, More than 10,000 people died this week in the United States because of COVID-19—including the first death in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody. Yet, ICE’s actions are increasing the risk of spreading the virus across the country. We’re demanding that ICE:
The complaint is based on the firsthand accounts of 17 people the Council has encountered in ICE detention facilities throughout the country. One asylum seeker, "Javier," describes the lack of protection at a New Mexico detention center: “The officials still had not given us masks or gloves. They had not taken our temperature a single time, and I saw others that had fevers and flu-like symptoms... I started to get sick with fever, body aches, and headaches. I was also hungry because I didn’t have money in my commissary account, and they do not give us enough food. I also started to have difficulty breathing." Unless immediate action is taken, more individuals will become ill and local health systems will be further strained—putting the health of every American at risk. Our nation can—and must—do better to protect everyone’s health. With your support, the Council will continue this fight. Sincerely, |
