Dear ,
We’d like to begin by reflecting on two recent hurricanes, Helene and Milton, and their deep impact on our community. Our hearts go out to everyone affected by the storms.
We are grateful to report that the Poynter’s headquarters in St. Petersburg largely escaped ([link removed]) the flooding from Helene and the destructive winds and rain from Milton. However, the building where Poynter’s newspaper, the Tampa Bay Times, is headquartered sustained significant damage when a crane struck one side during the storm. The Times no longer owns the building but leases space there. Fortunately, no employees were in the building at the time. We keep our colleagues in our thoughts.
We also want to take a moment to honor the incredible local journalism that kept our communities informed and connected throughout the storms. You can read a roundup of these reports here ([link removed]) .
Amidst these challenging times, we continue to move forward with our mission. Last month, we introduced two key thought-leadership pieces: The OnPoynt report ([link removed]) focusing on trends and traction in journalism and the news industry, and our Poynter Summit on AI, Ethics & Journalism summary ([link removed]) , which outlines our findings from our June 2024 summit.
We also launched The Poynter Report Podcast ([link removed]) and welcomed the Leadership Academy for Diversity in Media ([link removed]) on our St. Petersburg campus, bringing together BIPOC journalists to discuss how to overcome challenges they face in leadership roles.
Looking ahead, we’re excited to celebrate at our annual Bowtie Ball ([link removed]) , where we will honor Robin Roberts of "Good Morning America" with Poynter’s Medal for Lifetime Achievement.
Read on to learn more about these events and other updates from Poynter, and, as always, thank you for your continued support. Please reach out if you have any questions or would like to engage with us further.
Sincerely,

[link removed]
On Sept. 3, The Poynter Institute released The OnPoynt report, a first-of-its-kind publication that addresses the current state of journalism and the news industry. (Graphic by Chris Kozlowski)
Poynter’s new OnPoynt report offers somewhat of a rarity in the journalism world: hope and optimism.
Fully titled “OnPoynt — Values Rising: Trends and traction in journalism and the news industry” ([link removed]) , this first-of-its-kind thought leadership report from Poynter explores the key trends redefining the media landscape, including shifts in audience engagement, revenue strategies, trust in local news and emerging technologies.
Unlike many discussions that solely focus on the challenges facing journalism today, this report highlights reasons for optimism, referencing hopeful examples from news organizations of all sizes. Its aim is to motivate journalists to expand their creative horizons, reignite audience engagement through innovative storytelling formats and connect with diverse communities.

"I'm walking away with lessons that I'll carry for a lifetime."
This testimonial captures the essence of Poynter’s recent Leadership Academy for Diversity in Media ([link removed]) , held on our campus from Sept. 9-13.
The transformative event brought together BIPOC journalists from across the country, adding to a network of over 200 alumni who have developed the skills necessary to thrive both professionally and personally in the media industry.
Throughout the academy, participants engaged in role-plays, expert coaching, and thoughtful discussions focused on becoming great ethical managers who lead with creativity and empathy. They covered topics such as building collaborative teams, honing negotiation tactics and navigating newsroom culture.

The Poynter Institute’s AI Summit report covers the June 2024 Poynter Summit on AI, Ethics & Journalism. (Graphic by Chris Kozlowski)
As AI technology continues to shape the media landscape, ensuring transparency, ethics and audience-focused practices is essential.
This June, Poynter brought together over 40 newsroom leaders, technologists and journalists from organizations like the Associated Press, The Washington Post and OpenAI for the Poynter Summit on AI, Ethics & Journalism.
Our newly released report, “Poynter Summit on AI, Ethics & Journalism: Putting Audience and Ethics First,” ([link removed]) captures the key takeaways from the event. It explores audience concerns about AI in journalism — job security, transparency and data privacy — and suggests addressing them through strategies like AI disclosure, active audience feedback and investment in AI literacy.
