Over the past weeks, I’ve written about our Victorian Heritage Festival, Skeletons Alive and Cider Mills. This week, as we are in the middle of the Fall season, we’ll look at the spectacular colors we’re starting to experience as our local foliage starts changing into vibrant shades of red, yellow and orange hues. Our beautiful heritage trees are just one reason Northville is designated a TREE CITY USA.
BEFORE LOOKING INTO THE FALL COLORS IN THE AREA, LET’S SEE WHAT’S GOING ON IN "THE VILLE":
- Witches’ Night Out, Thursday 10/17, 6-9PM in Downtown Northville. Link
- Michigan Philharmonic Phright Night Halloween Concert, Saturday, 10/19, 7:30PM – Marquis Theater. Audience is invited to wear costumes. Link
- Halloween Hysteria at Mill Race Village, Sunday, 10/20, 1-5 PM – Fun for the family including crafts, story-time, refreshments and much more. Link
- Marquis Theatre’s Halloween Bash, Friday 10/25 at 8:30 PM – featuring the Shawn Riley Band, Costume Contest and PRIZES. Age 21 and older, Tickets $10 at the door. Link
- Streets of Treats, Saturday 10/26, 10AM - 12PM downtown Northville – trick or treating at our businesses sponsored by the Northville Chamber of Commerce
- Maybury Farm Corn Maze & Wagon Ride, Fridays - Sundays, till 11/3. Link

PROJECTS AROUND TOWN
- Ford Field – Phase I: (Fall) Infrastructure, waterfall, staircase, fencing, invasive tree removal / Phase II (Spring) – Vista, Play structure, bathrooms, drainage.
- Riverwalk – River Channel dug (River St. at the Downs) - other sections progressing.
- Downs Initiative – North section curbing and pavement progressing…additional infrastructure being readied for foundation work. In the South section, foundations at the previous Farmers Market area reading for construction. Building permits pending.
- Log Cabin – Moved & Winterized readying for use as a comfort station (River St.).
NEWLY FORMED TASK FORCE MEETINGS
- Cemetery Restoration Task Force – 10/28 (Next meeting) at City Hall 7:00 PM - Stop by the Oakwood Cemetery and see the work being done.

Let's take a look at areas where the brilliant colors are beginning to reveal themselves here in the VILLE!
Fall is definitely here with the trees starting to change to spectacular hues, with the aroma of bonfires and the sweet smell of cider in the air. If you want to enjoy the fall colors around Northville, I suggest you visit the following locations:
- NORTHVILLE’S PARMENTER’S CIDER MILL – Start your color tour by stopping by one of Michigan’s oldest cider mills (on the Rouge River) surrounded by a canopy of trees (714 Baseline Road). Parmenter’s is ranked as one of the top cider mills in Metro Detroit. Watch them make that sweet-smelling nectar using local apples while enjoying the colors of the trees that surround the Mill.
- MILL RACE VILLAGE – Just down the road from Parmenter’s, experience our historic Mill Race Village with its newly bricked lane (215 Griswold St) along with views at Ford Field. Take in the local colors and admire the brilliant fall reflections off the Mill Pond & the Middle Rouge River.
- VICTORIAN HOMES AND CHAMPION TREES – Walk down Dunlap St. with its historic Victorian homes and legacy trees dating back to the mid-1800’s. Continue your stroll in the Ville through the various traditional burgs, including the rest of the Historic District, Cabbagetown, Bealtown, and Orchard Heights, along with some spectacular hardwoods in the Northville Estates area.

- WAYNE COUNTY’S CASS BENTON PARK – Traverse through Wayne County’s Cass Benton Park on Hines Drive that runs between Northville and Dearborn. The State’s oldest Arboretum is in our community, also on Hines Drive. Remember, it’s not the destination that’s important in life but the journey … so enjoy the colors while you go down the Parkway.
- MAYBURY STATE PARK – Another great area to visit, with entry off Beck or 8 Mile. The Park includes close to 1000 acres of gently rolling terrain, open meadows and mature forests, giving spectacular fall bursts of colors.
- FISH HATCHERY PARK – take a scenic walk down by the river, the pond area, and the winding paths (635 Fairbrook – 7 Mile & Orchard Dr.).
- RURAL HILL CEMETERY – An additional hot spot for colors where you will find some of the oldest and most colorful trees in the area. Rural Hill Cemetery is truly spectacular and peaceful this time of year (215 W. 7 Mile/Rogers). Also check out Oakwood Cemetery on Cady St. with its over 200-year-old oaks.
THIS GOES TO SHOW YOU – to see some of the state’s most fantastic bursts of colors, you don’t have to go much farther than our own back yards.
