Email from Coalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Tuesday, October 15, 2024 For interviews contact: [email protected] CSVANW’s 9th Annual I Will Run for Them 5K Honors Domestic Violence Survivors Albuquerque, NM – The Coalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women (CSVANW) is proud to host the 9th Annual I Will Run for Them 5K, taking place on Saturday, October 19th, 2024, from 7 AM to 12 PM at The Avanyu Plaza, located on 12th Street just north of I-40 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This event coincides with Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) and aims to honor the resilience, strength, and spirit of Native survivors impacted by domestic violence. Participants are invited to run, jog, or walk in honor of their loved ones affected by violence, bringing attention to the urgent need for healing and support in communities facing this epidemic. The 5K serves as a space to uplift survivors, remember those lost to violence, and acknowledge the strength of those breaking the cycles of abuse. According to the staggering statistics: 4 out of 5 Native women will experience violence in their lifetime. 43.8% of lesbian women and 61.1% of bisexual women have faced rape, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner. 26% of gay men and 37.3% of bisexual men have experienced intimate partner violence. 47% of transgender individuals have been sexually assaulted at some point in their lives, according to the 2015 U.S. Transgender Survey. 1 in 10 men will face sexual or physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner, with many experiencing lasting impacts such as PTSD, injury, or fear for their safety. "These are not just statistics. They represent our mothers, sisters, brothers, relatives, and children. The ‘I Will Run for Them’ 5K is about honoring those who have endured violence, breaking the silence around these issues, and creating a pathway toward healing for our communities," says Tiffany Jiron, CSVANW Executive Director. The event is open to people of all ages and fitness levels, and participants are encouraged to dedicate their run, jog, or walk to a loved one impacted by the imbalance violence creates. Together, we can raise awareness, foster healing, and honor the beauty and resilience of all survivors.
