Winthrop Rockefeller Institute Receives Grant for STOP THE BLEED® Stations

I am pleased to announce that the Institute has received a generous grant from the Arkansas Blue & You Foundation, allowing us to purchase two STOP THE BLEED® Wall Mount Stations for our campus.

I became a STOP THE BLEED® Instructor to provide this life-saving training to as many of my colleagues and community members as possible. The Winthrop Rockefeller Institute, where I work, has supported this effort by becoming a STOP THE BLEED® Coalition Educational Licensee. As a result, 58 coworkers, local community members, and First Responders have received STOP THE BLEED® training in the past fiscal year.

The following Institute employees received a STOP THE BLEED® training certificate: Aaron Keith Kennard, Andy Rohlman, Austin Bond, Austin DuVall, Carter Wagner, Cheyanne Parish, Cody Choumany, Diana Hardin, Grant Wray, James Bradley, Joseph Cambell, JR Rager, Katelyn Lemley, Kimberly Bolin, Kyle Robin, Lance Oakley, Lisa Turner, Marty Allred, Melissa Lopes, Molly Thomason, Scott Price, Shane Engebrecht, Stephanie Flowers, Tracy Jones, Will Tindell, and Winton Wagner.

This training is just one part of the equation, though. The other necessary component is having the right medical equipment to implement that training. This is why the Arkansas Blue & You Foundation grant was so vital to our facility. Each STOP THE BLEED® Wall Mount Station houses eight individual Advanced STOP THE BLEED® Kits.

These kits contain nitrile gloves, shears, a tourniquet, hemostatic dressing, a pressure bandage, chest seals, an emergency blanket, a mini-Sharpie, and a quick reference pamphlet — everything necessary to address a bleeding emergency. While we hope we never have to use them, the peace of mind from having the kits and trained staff ready is invaluable.

Bleeding control training included in Casualty Care training for Collier County deputies to save lives before EMS arrival

Inside the Collier County Sheriff's Office Professional Development Center in downtown Naples Tuesday morning, numerous members of the department trained to provide lifesaving care to protect citizens of the county in the event of an emergency.

"It started as simple first aid, and then it evolved into more complex, basic life-support programs. Then, our casualty care program is really the cornerstone of some of that, where it's more trauma-focused than basic life-support-focused," said Dr. John Ianni, a physical therapist who serves as the instructor of the course.

The program, which is modeled after military training for combat injuries, focuses on medical treatment that can be provided prior to emergency medical services' arrival on the scene. Those tactics include, but are not limited to:

Tourniquet application

CPR

Automatic external defibrillator use

Stopping/plugging large, bleeding wounds

"So, the first responders that we have in the agency, they're truly the first people on scene most of the times, and they have to have that ability to act decisively and sharply and quickly at a moment's notice. People are going to be relying on them to render that aid first and foremost before anybody else shows up," said Ianni.

There are numerous examples of this training leading to lifesaving rescues, according to the sheriff's office. One of those is the rescue conducted by Cpl. Richard Jacobs, who used the course knowledge to provide care to Manuel Milanes, a good Samaritan who was shot in the chest during a domestic violence dispute in Ave Maria in late August.

International Story: The Muscular Dystrophy Foundation of South Africa hosted a STOP THE BLEED® and self-defense workshop to prepare residents for emergencies.

On October 5, West Rand School hosted an international STOP THE BLEED® and self-defense workshop.

The aim was to equip participants with vital life-saving skills.

According to Muscular Dystrophy Foundation of South Africa (MDFSA) administrator Sarie Truter, this course was held in partnership with Captain Hennie Bouwer of the police’s provincial head office, Warren Bouwer of Criminal Forensic Investigations and occupational health and safety professional, Alicia Bouwer.

“The workshop focused on stopping severe bleeding and providing essential aid within the critical first few minutes of an emergency. Attendees learned to stay calm under pressure, protect themselves and others, and stabilise injuries until medical help arrived. The workshop also addressed survival strategies for dangerous situations, such as public shootings, house attacks, house burglaries and armed robberies at work offices, emphasising safety over combat techniques,” Sarie added.
