Publication Integrity Week
Welcome to the October issue of COPE Digest.
We are excited to announce that Publication Integrity Week is open to everyone within the publication ethics community. While COPE Members can attend all sessions at no cost, non-members are welcome to join us for a fee for select sessions, with some sessions available for free. We look forward to connecting with a wider audience and broadening our discussions together.
** Event programme 18-22 November 2024

* Plagiarism Monday
We are facing new challenges and ways of thinking about plagiarism. The speakers in this session will describe some of these new perspectives and outline what they mean for the world of scholarly publishing.
* Working together Tuesday
This day has a special focus on journals, publishers, and university and research institutes working together to solve publication integrity issues.
* The future of publication ethics Wednesday
Across three different panels we will hear from experts on how we can use AI to detect ethical issues, how ethics can be applied to publications beyond books and journals, and how peer review is changing in the modern age.
* Paper mills Thursday
Learn how the United2Act project on tackling paper mills is progressing, hear from experts on authorship for sale, and (for COPE Members only) take part in a practical workshop on handling cases of suspected paper mill activity.
* Dealing with data Friday
The speakers in this session will address data issues from a range of perspectives, from considering equality and diversity, to handling qualitative data, and implementing data sharing policies.

** DETERMINING ACCEPTABLE LEVELS OF PLAGIARISM/DUPLICATION
------------------------------------------------------------
There's no simple answer to "What percentage of plagiarism is okay?". What matters is the nature and degree of duplication which indicates whether an editor will consider it plagiarism.
The COPE position gives more details, with examples, to clarify what might be considered plagiarism.

** INTERNATIONAL SUMMIT ON MEDICAL RESEARCH AND PUBLICATION

SHANGHAI, CHINA
COPE Council Member, Trevor Lane, is speaking at the 4th International Summit on Medical Research and Publication on the topic "Enhancing the integrity of medical research publications".
The conference will be held on 26-27 October in Shanghai, China. It is hosted by Xia & He Publishing Inc., in collaboration with Beijing Health Promotion Associatio, with the guidance of the Health Commission and Science and Technology Economy Commission of Shanghai Yangpu District and Shanghai Yangpu Technology & Innovation Group.

COPE Members: if you have a publication ethics issue you are currently dealing with and need advice from other COPE members, submit your case for discussion and advice at the Forum or from COPE Council Members.
The next COPE Forum will be held on Tuesday 17 December beginning with a discussion on Expressions of Concern, followed by the case discussions.
