A New Shelter in Queretaro, Mexico

Queretaro, located in the center of Mexico, is on the main route used by thousands of migrants as they pursue a better life for themselves and their children. It also is an economic center, as well as a hotbed of organized crime. The migrant population is a frequent target of the cartels. 

Not surprising, though, the Mexican Franciscan Network on Migration have chosen to stand with migrants as they travel through Queretaro.  And so has the Quixote Center. 

With our help and that of the local Franciscan community, RFM will be inaugurating a new shelter for people migrating through central Mexico, providing them with a safe space in the midst of this volatile area, as they wait for their asylum request appointment.

Now in the planning phase, the Queretaro shelter will provide weary, defenseless travelers with the basic essentials: food and board, spiritual accompaniment as well as legal counsel.  

Quixote Center's first contribution toward making this much needed shelter a reality is paying for the training of the volunteers who will set up and staff the Queretaro center.  We have pledged $3000 to our Mexican Franciscan partners and plan to continue our support their efforts to protect the dignity and safety of migrants.
