Dear John, We’re at a historic moment in our country’s history. For the first time, a woman of color is leading a major-party ticket as a nominee for President of the United States. This historic moment would not have been possible without the movement leaders and grassroots organizers who led us here. Every day, in communities across the country, these leaders are working to make the lives of their neighbors better, safer, and more just. This looks like coordinating voter registration initiatives, providing community care after natural disasters, creating programs to help formerly incarcerated people get back to work, and much more. These leaders are developing community-based, innovative solutions that improve people’s lives. But their proximity to the issues they focus on puts them at risk of burning out. We also know from our research that women and gender-expansive leaders don’t receive nearly enough support to meet their needs. At Ms. Foundation, we are committed to supporting movement leaders by investing in them, strengthening their capacity, and providing other resources and connections to help ensure the sustainability of the essential work they’re doing to advance democracy. For individuals, supporting grassroots leaders starts with getting involved at a local level. Check out organizations near you -- some may even be our grantee partners -- and learn about what they’re advocating for. Those closest to the issues have the answers and the community relationships to make a difference. By voting, we also give power to grassroots voices, ensuring their efforts are reflected in and influence local, state, and national outcomes. Today, I urge you to make a voting plan. Locate your polling place, and think about when you’ll vote and how you’ll get to the polls. Together, we have the power to create lasting change. We can amplify the work of grassroots leaders by making sure all of our voices are heard at the polls. In solidarity, |
