On Monday, the Trump Administration announced they were going to weaken the Endangered Species Act.

In a time when climate change is posing a major threat to dozens of animals, we should be strengthening, not diminishing, protections.

Here’s what some of the changes entail:

1. It will now be harder to classify an animal as “endangered,” even if they are in serious danger.
2. “Economic assessments” are now allowed to undermine scientific evidence and determine whether or not an animal is in harm's way.
3. This is a clear path for drilling and mining to increase in areas where now-classified endangered species live.

This is just another example of the Trump Administration placing special interests ahead of public interests.

When I took office in January, I promised to do my part to protect our environment. The future our children inherit is determined by the actions we take now.
