Like so many of you, I’m the product of great teachers who inspired me to learn. They also had a profound influence on almost every aspect of my life. We owe every young person similar opportunities to grow and learn. That’s possible only with quality public schools. That’s why I have a passion for public education.
Now more than ever it’s important we appreciate our teachers and all they do for our communities and country — especially as they work to solve the challenge of educating students remotely.
Yet, to be frank, our education system is failing. Too many Americans readily dismiss science and fall for wild conspiracy theories and fake news, while those who pursue higher education drown in debt.
Our community is faced with even more challenges, given the fact that my opponent, while a member of the Florida House, said that “the Federal government has no business being involved in education, and ... will file legislation to abolish the Department of Education.”
It’s time to invest in what actually made America great — education.
