John,

On Indigenous Peoples’ Day we honor the contributions, sacrifices and rich cultures of indigenous peoples across the country.

California’s history is inextricably linked to the history of indigenous peoples – and is home to the largest population of Native Americans in the country – but too often we have glossed over historical injustices and native voices have been overlooked or left out entirely.

Whether it’s elevating native voices in work to conserve natural resources, co-manage public lands, or finding solutions to the pervasive crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women and people (MMIP), I’ve been proud to stand with Indigenous communities throughout my time in Congress.

Today and every day, it is important that we honor the central role Native Americans play in our history, our culture, and our aspirations to be a more perfect union. By doing so, we also rededicate ourselves to the unfinished work of breaking down barriers and confronting injustices that persist in indigenous communities.

Thank you.

– Jared
