As we observe Indigenous Peoples’ Day today, we honor the rich history and enduring legacy of Native Americans, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians, whose knowledge, and traditions have shaped and continue to enrich our culture.

We must also confront the painful history of oppression these communities have endured, including from America's government. For centuries, Indigenous peoples faced violent displacement from their lands, forced assimilation, broken treaties, and systemic efforts to erase their cultures and languages. Federal policies stripped them of their rights, their homes, and, in many cases, their lives.

Lauren is committed to righting these historic wrongs. This year, she introduced the Tribal Climate Health Assurance Act to help Nations address the growing impacts of climate change on their communities. She also introduced the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation Shab-eh-nay Band Reservation Settlement Act to restore the land that was stolen from them in the 19th century. Now, nearly 200 years later, we celebrate alongside the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation and honor cultural integrity, self-governance, and sovereignty.

These legislative efforts are important steps toward righting historical wrongs and honoring the sovereignty that Indigenous communities have always deserved. These efforts also serve as a reminder of the shared struggles that Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities face. By uniting our voices and our causes, we can build a coalition for equity and justice that spans across all marginalized populations. This solidarity strengthens our collective fight for a fairer, more inclusive future.

Beyond this work, today is about honoring the strength and resilience of Indigenous peoples and their continued contributions — their wisdom, traditions, and leadership — that we can learn from and build a future where all Indigenous peoples are regarded with the respect and dignity they deserve.

We recognize there is more work to do. Honoring Indigenous peoples today means standing alongside them and working to create a future where Native communities can thrive on their own terms.

Today and every day, we honor Indigenous peoples’ past, celebrate their present, and support their vision for a just and sovereign future.
