Hi team,
Today, California Environmental Voters is recognizing and celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day.
Our goal here at California Environmental Voters is to build resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and create a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all. That vision must deeply center the recognition and realization of who this land belongs to in all our climate and democracy solutions.
This year, we were proud to stand alongside Indigenous Tribes in passing Senate Joint Resolutions 16 and 17, which call on the Biden administration to use the Antiquities Act to protect our public lands. Thanks to the leadership of these Tribal nations, we are one step closer to ensuring the permanent protection of Chuckwalla, Kw’tsán, and Sáttítla.
Check out our video on social media about the critical work we did together this year.
This is a significant milestone in the ongoing effort to designate Chuckwalla, Kw’tsán, and Sáttítla as national monuments. These lands carry deep cultural, ecological, and spiritual importance for the Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indians, the Fort Yuma Quechan Indian Tribe, and many other Tribal nations who have been stewards of these lands for generations.
The conservation movement has marginalized the voices of Indigenous people throughout history. Now, it’s up to us to diligently repair this harm and ensure the perspectives and needs of Indigenous communities across California are centered in all that we do.
For us, that means continuing outreach to local Tribes across our state to engage in listening sessions, working to protect Indigenous land and water from polluters, establishing ethical water and land rights, holding Big Oil and corporations accountable for their damage to frontline communities through transformative state policy, expanding access to our democracy, and more.
Thanks for everything,
California Environmental Voters
