Last week, presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate Governor Tim Walz released their proposal to expand Medicare, and it’s a bold step in the right direction as we continue to fight for Medicare for All.
Under this plan, Harris and Walz propose expanding Medicare benefits to finally include vision, hearing, and a long-term care-at-home program. It would also expand Medicare drug price negotiations, lowering even more drug prices for seniors.
This is news worth celebrating. Vision and hearing are currently not covered by Medicare, leaving millions of low-income seniors unable to afford hearing aids and eyeglasses. Covering the cost of these crucial items to help seniors see and hear will undoubtedly improve their quality of life and help prevent other health issues and injuries such as falls and depression.
Federal coverage of long-term, at-home care is also desperately needed. Millions of seniors and people with disabilities would understandably prefer receiving medical care in the comfort of their own homes rather than in nursing home facilities. This program would make that achievable, improving the quality of life for countless patients and their families.
This proposed Medicare expansion would make a massive, tangible difference in the lives of millions of people across the country.
While we continue to build our nationwide movement for guaranteed health care for all, we applaud this proposal and hope to see it become a reality soon.
In solidarity,
