Today is Indigenous Peoples’ Day, friend.

On this day, we honor, celebrate, and acknowledge Indigenous Peoples’ survival, rich cultural heritage, and invaluable contributions to our communities and our lives.

District Four is the rightful home of the Kumeyaay people, hunter-gatherers known for their vast plant knowledge, skilled craftsmanship, and advanced farming and labor systems.

Without their hard work, we would not be where we are today.

But one day is not nearly enough to reverse or remedy our nation’s long history of systemic oppression, colonial violence, land theft, and marginalization of Indigenous communities.

Every single day we live and work in our San Diego County communities, we owe an enormous debt to the Indigenous People whose land is now our home.

San Diego County has more Indigenous nations than any other county in the United States. Yet Indigenous San Diegans are grossly underrepresented in all levels of our government and continue to face chronic health and housing disparities.

As your Supervisor, I am dedicated to addressing these historic harms and uplifting Indigenous voices on the Board. The fight for Indigenous sovereignty, ancestral land, and equity belongs to all of us.
